Reconfiguration Proposal

October 31, 2018

Dear BHUSD Families and Staff,

We’re excited to share a historic decision that was made last night by the Board of Education.  The Board voted to reconfigure our (four) K-8 school to (two) TK-5 schools at Hawthorne and Horace Mann, and (one) 6-8 consolidated middle school at Beverly Vista in August 2019, and to take El Rodeo off-line for construction for 2 years, beginning June 2019.

  • El Rodeo school community grades K-5 students will move to Hawthorne
  • Beverly Vista school community grades TK-5 will move to Horace Mann
  • El Rodeo, Hawthorne, Horace Mann school communities grades 6-8 will move to Beverly Vista

We are confident that the reconfiguration will deliver the best educational opportunities that meet the needs of every student in the district.  Rooted in the core unified mission, the plan reflects the values and priorities that will bring the greatest possible, longest-lasting improvement for our students of today and tomorrow.  But we also understand that change is challenging and are completely mindful that every person in our BHUSD community will be impacted - students, parents, teachers and staff.

With students as the center of our focus, we will support each other through these challenging, emotional and exciting times with transition committees to oversee all areas of implementation (from logistics to HR, to curriculum development, to facilities, to finance, to extracurricular, to culture).  The success of this reconfiguration will come from strong leadership, a dedicated faculty, involved parents and a robust curriculum that adapts to all levels of learning.

The plan was built on a long process that was rigorous, iterative, challenging and courageous.  Thank you to all those that shared your voices throughout this entire process - parents, students, staff, teachers, and to the amazing Future Focused Schools Team committee that poured countless hours and heart into careful research and evaluation. Thank you to the Board of Education for supporting this historical change that will allow us to achieve the greatest potential of all our students, staff and teachers.

We will continue to work diligently on a long-term detailed plan that answers many of the thoughtful questions that our community shared over the last week.  Bringing the plan to successful implementation will require hyper-focused commitment, collaboration, and perseverance from all of those who care about the children in our community.

Your ongoing partnership will assure that our new initiatives and actions will move us forward as a united district.  You are key to our success and hope that your participation continues at our meetings, on transition committees, and through emails to our district leadership team and [email protected].

Working together towards our unified mission, we can achieve educational excellence for each student, every day, across the entire district.   #BH1

Respectfully,

Dr. Michael Bregy
