Goldstein it's my pleasure and privilege to present resolution 2016-2017 or 1/3  to how it Goldstein and I'd like to read it where is Howard Goldstein has served as president of Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education from December 2015 to December 2000 16 and whereas he is worth vigorously on the measure why Bond initiative in school modernization and whereas he has been a strong Advocate we have all students in each School believing each student Cannon wildern and whereas he established a strong and collaborative relationship with BHA and where he has been a Relentless advocate for the Beverly Hills unified school district schools and whereas he has emphasized the importance of a strong relationship with the city of play Hills by keeping the lines of communication open now therefore the it resolved that the Beverly Hills board of education does here by Honor Howard Goldstein is distinguished leadership and outstanding service on behalf of the students and staff of the Beverly Hills Unified School District with his sixth day of December wasn't in 16 signed by me as vice-president and Steve Kessler as superintendent of schools represent this resolution to you thinking of some stress  also I'm pleased to present you mr. Goldstein with this plaque and gavel it reads Beverly Hills Unified School District in appreciation Howard Goldstein president Board of Education December 2015 December 2016  and just like it just just a word of my own I'm I want to I think most people some people here may be aware that this has been a pretty tough year for Howard he's had he has wife had a prolonged illness thank God that she's on the mend and he was undeterred and and he showed his true metal and I admire in very very much for it he's been a good leader a great leader thank you thank you vice president Spitz superintendent cast-iron callings it's much appreciated We Gather to celebrate an institution into a firm it's important mission to provide a quality public education to the children of Beverly Hills are students today are beneficiaries of the generations of Faculty staff and parents who have left their mark on this institution giving neighbor and commitment in order for our students to pursue their dreams we are heirs to a history that farce of the significance of this particular Moment In Time  last month we mourn the passing of to exceptional bhusd Educators been Bushman beloved former principal at Beverly Hills High School and Bill Porter and inspirational teacher at El row these two men inspired generations of students and staff they will be profoundly missed I appear before you this evening for the last time as your board president and honor for which I will always be eternally grateful to this community  a school district task first task is to ensure that each day it students returned safely back home to their families do that ended for the Police substations at all School sites I am proud to say that there are currently Beverly Hills police stations in use all 4K schools and the high school  this past year are State testing place Beverly Hills Unified School District in the top 1 70% of all school districts in California and the district ranks fourth out of all basic aide schools in the state linking rigorous skills in learning change your program to ensure that all students graduate with the ability to follow their passion for their that takes them to higher education or directly to their careers today's City offers students an opportunity to receive a through G credit to reinforce academic skills and to introduce Stu professional experiences Global Learning in the 21st century requires our students utilize advanced technology to that end I advocated for use technology officer last month this board approved the most comprehensive technology plan this district has ever seen a dynamic for centuries School District wires facilities that are energy efficient incorporates the latest technology available provides enhanced security and is environmentally healthier for students and staff this past August we open such a facility at Horace Mann similar renovations to the original hiss turn buildings in Beverly High El Rodeo and Horace Mann will soon be completed once again in this District finds itself at a defining moment its history I am hopeful that in the search for yet another superintendent there is a board self-realization and a collaborative sense of mission I remind this board that we cannot transform positive outcomes fighting over different agendas we can only improve student outcomes by coming I asked my colleagues to reflect on this moment and acknowledge that if we impede our Administration we undermine their leader although he does not seek nor does he desire to be at the center of attention this evening I would be remiss if I did not think superintendent Steve Kessler for his 40 Years of dedicated service to this District lastly I am deeply grateful to my wife Juliet who's really done the heavy lifting this year and to my Gaben in for the sacrifices they have made each and every day that have enabled me to give of my time over the years as a parent volunteer and as a governing board member of the Beverly Hills Unified School District thank you president Goldstein do we get to remark on your accomplishment if you feel it's necessary necessary what's the student board rap I'll keep it short and sweet mr. Goldstein I have known you since was born what side you on sport thank you  so I woke up this morning with the goal of writing a bunch of stuff not you Howard but then Facebook reminded me that I was been 5 years ago today that I started serving our community here I love those all reminders it makes me not worry my memory going  so when that spirit and before I Heap accolades upon you I like to just share some quick thoughts why do we do this people are shocked when I try to explain to them that this position is 100% volunteer there are no stipends no benefits no special parking passes no offices no assist Zephyr Pam  we are never featured guests anywhere and really the only thing we get is bottled water grief and we get those in bulk the we do this because we've asked the question what can I do that will benefit students and hopefully we never stop asking soon we will be hiring a new superintendent which is without a doubt the most important decision to school board must people are already coming out of the woodwork to apply non the matter my internet speed should work as fast as the gossip in this town she ate the people care but I want to remind everyone that no matter who becomes superintendent this district and more importantly this board must welcome and stop person boards and general have done a lackluster job in that department and for any role I've played in that however in significantly small I my grandmother says every knock is a boost we have the opportunity to not just move forward but to move up mr. Kessler you have done for us so thank you  now Howard what a year you've had you are without a doubt the most optimistic board member I've served with you have been consistent in the face of adversity and you have never wavered from your convictions you never take it personally and you always choose the moral High Ground appreciated your leadership this past year and I would vote you in for a second year but I'm a little tired of the whole Oregon Ducks thing  USC Rose Bowl enough said congratulations mr. Goldstein on a year Well served my colleague in my friend this is this is from the board mr. Goldstein I just want to say thank you for a year Well served as a board member and our president of this board and our district I know that I'm just being a board member this year know that I'm it's been challenging with time and a lot of Demands and I cannot imagine what your job has been think you've done it with and good leadership and I know that you really care about this district and I thank you so much for your time I also want to thank your family Julie how you doing better and I hope the next year is we can continue to work together thank you I'm Howard it I really do want to thank you you've been tireless I didn't prepare any statement I'm so glad to see Julie here looking wonderful you gave your heart you give your heart everyday I wrote in the card thank you for your hard work is really a work of a labor of love and I want to thank you you are unusually chipper optimistic always good have cheer and always try to put yourself in other people's shoes and give them the method of the doubt it's mostly wonderful to listen to in a few times annoying but generally speaking it's a wonderful attribute that you model for the if I appreciate it and I appreciate all of the good cheer and the good efforts you've put in this last three years but this last year was this demanding for you in difficult tonight I appreciate so much what you've done for us and to Steve I I got to know you when my daughter when go to horse map sort of last-minute years ago you were so kind and so welcoming and I'm always in your dad for the way you treat children and them the way I got to see you treat my own daughter and I want to thank you and I wish you good tidings and I hope you have a bucket list that's as exciting as I watching that you stay in touch with us let us know how you're doing on that bucket list  and with that I'm done thank you I can only Echo I can only Echo what our colleagues have said congratulate you and thank you and as I attempt to feel your shoes and that chair I'm going to look to you for guidance anyone else down there power died I'd like to thank you not only for this year but for all your years of service that you have given to our district thank you very very much okay moving on to board reorganization moving on to the election of Vice mr. chairman I want to nominate as vice president for this coming year Lisa Corbett off nominations been placed on the floor with regard to the vice president position of Lisa korbatov given are Paws indicate there's no second required and it will be now my duty to inquire of the nominee as to whether nominee like to stop the nomination ascorbate off  and with that the nominee has accepted the nomination vice presidents  should we have a discussion or go straight to a vote McCall absolutely all in favor graduation ascorbate top Carrie's 5-0 including I believe our student student board rep and collect next year mr. Margo is going to swear me in beats being sore thank you that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States Constitution California of the State of California all enemies foreign and domestic the Constitution of the United States to the United States and the constitution of the State of California State of California purpose of evasion and that I will well and Faithfully discharge the duties upon which I'm about to enter thank you mr. Martin  set alarm for every one thank you I read to read this cuz the last two times I couldn't get it right thank you for this opportunity to serve my beginning of my eighth year wow and I pledge to work collaboratively with all I think this last year has proven to be actually quite smooth despite some hiccups we've all gotten along very well and I pledged to continue in that pack and I wish I saw the very best our district and I just would like to know if anyone has a money tree I'd like to plant one right in the middle of Beverly Hills you red what's the score  okay moving on to my last official act as president of the board election of the president  I would like to take this time to nominate The Honorable male spits our current Vice Pres to the presidency of the Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education and it's my pleasure in my honor thank you Spitz do you accept the nomination timing accepted the nomination colleagues all in favor I congratulations mr. Sid I will ask superintendent Kessler to kindly administer the oath of office pictures please raise your right hand and repeat after me I please state your name to solemnly swear when the Constitution of the United States enemies foreign and domestic and the constitution of the State of California the Constitution the state of California that I take this obligation freely that I take this obligation any mental reservation or purpose of evasion without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion and that I will well and Faithfully discharge the duties of and that I will well and Faithfully discharge the duties upon which I'm about to enter graduations presidents I thank you colleagues for placing your confidence in me as your president I'll promote inclusion and throughout the coming year  I'd like to thank my family for their constant support I love them more than words can say Barbara and I celebrated our 61st anniversary last week aside from being my best friend in sounding board  she now has dinner ready for me at all hours follow board meetings  son Steven and Ken daughter Nancy are incredibly supportive grandson David makes interesting suggestions from a sixth grade perspective  my sister-in-law and brother-in-law Diana and Victor whiner and my niece all Beverly Hills graduates are here  and also my cousins Lou and Melissa Spitz are here who was famous student-athlete at Beverly High so family won't you please stand and let everybody see that you're here please last year when I campaign for election to this board of education I pledged to provide leadership to resolve financial and organizational problems promote transparency and restore confidence pride and support within the community I repeat that pledge tonight and I am confident that results will be evident  within the coming weeks  we will demonstrate to staff in the community beyond the shadow of a doubt that we must stop deficit spending without delay are the district will become insolvent accordingly we will reduce expenditures significantly in the upcoming school year there is no alternative Sears in making decisions about that we will select the that are the least impactful on the educational program our deliberations will be an open session and we will encourage staff and to attend and provide input  an immediate objective in which we are currently engaged as you have heard is hiring a superintendent to replace Steve Kessler who is retiring  mr. Kessler is respected and revered after a lifetime of service to our school district as a student-athlete teacher principal and superintendent and I asked for another round of Applause for him I speak for my colleagues in assuring staff and the community that we will settle for no less then approve an administrator and educator one who will bring leadership and stability to the district from day one tonight we will adopt the mission and vision statement  post it on our agenda you stated mission is clear and concise it is to enable each student to achieve academic excellence and meet the goals of College and Career yes  as we support staff in achieving that mission and I want to address this to the school Prince those were here and I appreciate your being here very much as we support you in achieving that mission how much desired by product is it every staff member feel energized and fulfilled  I'm on my expectation in a very challenging year ahead are these in no particular order achieving Financial stability and by the way if you agree with any of these let me hear you strengthening the district's academic programs sing a program to provide technology equally throughout the district  settling the MTA tunneling issue scheduling completion of the modernization of our schools in a timeframe similar to what would have been possible with why funding improving communication and liaison with a Citizens oversight committee and continuing to rely upon the expertise of our finance committee the resourcefulness of the bhf the wavering support of the pta's in furtherance of the education and well-being of all our students above all while I occupy that chair there will be transparency and open lines of communication all the districts stock stakeholders thank you very much we are now on our agenda for the organizational actions first the adoption of can you emotions may I have a motion so moved moved by mr. Margo seconded by mrs. hacker  any comment  all in favor I post  passed unanimously next a motion to approve the certification of signatures I have a motion to approve this  motion by mrs. hack you're in a second by Vester Goldstein and a discussion all in favor I next we have the board meeting dates  from a commotion who are the board meeting dates for December 2016 through December 2017 any discussion president there are some dates that I will may not be able to attend next summer but I will inform you with thank you any other discussion all in favor I opposed motion carries unanimously our next order of business is a selection of annual representatives to the LA County School trustees Association and there are that's posted Dailymotion  I continue to volunteer first okay  I was I was going to propose to the board if they'd be if the board members would be interested in alternating the attendance of that meeting it's a monthly meeting and so perhaps we can alternate with the exception of the board president permitted to do that or do we need one I think  I've attended and I think it's not an issue only because it's it's always on the Monday and it's at 4:30 and they alternate different locations and I think it's sometimes very difficult especially if there's a you meeting ahead of that meeting so I would really recommend that the board consider alternating the attendance of that meeting by or to alternate members of the board designee for that position with the understanding of that can occur that I be most appreciative of my colleagues rotating through happy to continue doing if you want with me we can we alternate I will but I need an alternate  thank you why we have a volunteer of the designee is mrs. hacker and an alternate is mr. Gold's any further discussion I'll move to approve that representative so it's moved by Sister Margo and seconded by gorbatov all in favor we will designate board Representatives and we have four positions the first one is the city liaison which is it has you normally and usually been the President and Vice President I would suggest we continue that is there do we need a motion on that the next one is the Oil Well ad hoc committee which currently is Howard Goldstein and Noah Margo and I I would appreciate it if both of you would continue in that position  I'll be happy to  so we need a emotion on that that is  mr. Margo and mr. Goldstein the health and safety Commission I think currently is that the mrs. hacker I was not able to attend the meetings on the Monday which is a problem with lobster I've been serving on the human relations commission for over well over a year and I be willing to switch to health and safety if somebody wants to take over the human relations  okay tomorrow when does human  they meet Thursdays one Thursday a month I think the middle second Thursday in the month at 9 wonderful then mr. Margo will be representative on the health and safety commission and Mrs korbatov will be are represented for the human relations Commission thank you colleagues for getting us through that item 9 professional official business approval of the mission and statement may I have a motion I make a motion to approve the mission and vision statement move by mr. Margo seconded by mrs. hacker any discussion  yeah I would just want to know for the community that that this is one of the find an examples of the five of us getting together with dr. Tedford for a lot of reasons but basically for the English spell check add work together to to condense the current mission and vision statements to make the Practical and make them current and I was proud of the five of us are actually getting that we've been talking about it for a year I believe and we accomplished it so thanks everybody involved  any other discussion I'd mention that  this mission and vision statement is posted on tonight's agenda for anyone that would like to take a look I suggest you read it it's as I said before it's clear and concise we have a motion add a second all in favor I opposed passed unanimously we are at the point now of Ford communication Stu Schwartz I think all agree that the magicals were wonderful earlier today and I've been to all of their concerts since freshman year and I will say that they never cease to amaze me so I hope to see everyone there tomorrow and I know that Orchestra also has a concert on Thursday I believe so I hope to see when there at those two concerts no I've made my comments earlier thank you I'm very hungry and want everybody to get to dinner thank you I just want to thank the magicals again for coming out I think I thought their performances is always outstanding thank you to mrs. katawa for her and leadership in that group I think it's wonderful the work that she does I also wanted to just acknowledge the attendance of our class or student body president Natasha malamud from Hawthorne Powell of Santa's from horse man here somewhere and Vern Armadale and finberg and Jaden Biloxi from Beverly Vista and of course Noah Le Lo from the Beverly Hills High and I did not hear the name of your wait here it is my toss-up sarafyan thank you for attending get really says a lot about your commitment to our district and I think it's great that your government and I would encourage you to continue that going forward and I also just want to say congratulations to president spits and vice president korbatov and good luck to both of you to Goldston yes I also like to congratulate you mistress Pitts presidents and vice-presidents off or looking forward to a great year and I hope this will set president that our board meetings I think you've handled this board meeting for 12 minutes so we can have 12 add and I know my colleagues would but I have no doubt that this district is in good hands with you as president and I do thank you for stepping up and actually wasn't easy to come back after doing this the first go-round and I believe you are entering your 10th years that correct on the board 11th year  yes I love you you're starting 11 and that should be tomorrow so I want to thank you for your past service and you continued service to this disk you so much mr. Gorbachev I think it'll be known to the public mrs. Carter had sent us an email about mr. salvatori occupancy if anyone here had him I certainly did yes well he passed away I don't know exactly when thousand dollars  and he had amassed quite a small fortune and was very charitable never forgot where he spent his best years I was in his class and I will tell play some all the years of work here and at USC that that was the most proudest a I ever received was from him he was it was like college-level course he was quite charming and he called me Linda Finch and I constantly told him my name was Lisa fish but he kept saying Linda Finch I gave up and that's how I just was so Charming you such a nice man when Latonya asked me to try to conjure up some memories she wanted to know pictures I went through my yearbooks between my husband and I who was here year before me I found three year books I went in and I found this truck panty and of course I saw pictures of everyone it was wow cold it was a shock but there was a yearbook that had pictures of school board members and there was mr. Smith's and I believe Mel it was 1979 or 80 I'm going to bring all through your books I believe I know you're in one of them and think it was 79 I may have been your last year and there was mr. Spitz as tall as he is today with a full head of hair the same full head just a little darker then and it was really it was it was amazing to think how life comes full circle and I know if I would have asked you that turn as a freshman mistress fist you think you'll come back and be my colleague in 30 some odd years I'm not sure what the answer would have been so anyway I want to tell you that we bringing those yearbooks on you might have copies at home do you have any coffee I'm going to bring you mine and I just want to say to mr. Spitz I have call confidence because of your Boyle Heights education that you were going to run the absolute world's best meetings absolutely and I want to wish everyone a happy and healthy Christmas and help you healthy New Year and a happy Hanukkah thank you yes I just wanted to wish vice president Corbett off and president spits all the luck in the world and I look forward to a good successful year and the district next year thank you thank you  everybody I'm not going to take up your time there's been a lot of speechmaking I will so I'll Detroit I want to thank everybody for attending I particularly appreciate the staff members the school principals who are here you're you're being present at our meetings means a lot so thanks very much for being here and what's this meeting is adjourned
