BHUSD Learning Management System (LMS)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

(March 28, 2018)

Greetings, BHUSD Community,

Introduction

The Technology Department is excited to work with our school community to secure and implement a Learning Management System (LMS).  A LMS is an important instructional technology tool designed to advance the hard work of students and teachers while advancing communication and collaboration amongst all stakeholder groups.

FAQ Organization & Updates

The FAQ is organized by stakeholder group for ease of access.  You will see questions repeated for this reason.  However, the Technology Team felt it important that all stakeholder groups have access to each other’s questions.

The FAQ will be regularly updated, so that we keep you fully informed as we select, procure, and implement the LMS.  Please refer to the FAQ date to determine the version.

Purpose

We are committed to keeping our community informed and knowledgeable about this process.  Please check the website and other communications to stay current on the latest LMS information.

We look forward to supporting our entire District community through the LMS implementation.

Sincerely,

The Technology Team

Teachers

Why is BHUSD implementing a LMS?

The LMS will create a personalized learning space where students access content.  This space will strengthen vital skills in students such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

What is an LMS?

A LMS is a web-based technology used to plan, implement, and assess instruction.

What is the LMS timeline?

The Technology Team began the LMS selection process in January 2018.  The LMS is scheduled to be selected by the District stakeholders by June 2018 for board approval.  The LMS pilot is scheduled for Fall 2018 with a District-wide roll-out schedule for Fall 2019.  Please see the timeline below.

What is the difference between an LMS and Google Classroom?

A Learning Management System allows teachers to manage and deliver course content in a self-contained environment.  Like Google Classroom, an LMS provides storage for digital content, the ability to generate assignments and announcements, and use tools such as the Google Suite of apps. An LMS is different from Google Classroom because it automates learner data, registration, assessment modules, and scheduling. The LMS platform can also provide a gradebook, discussion boards, groups, as well as other collaborative tools that allow teachers to build standards-based courses and units of study, track student participation, and provide detailed analytics.

What are the benefits of using an LMS?

The benefits of a LMS are innumerable. Please click What Is a LMS & What Are Its Benefits?

Can I take attendance in the LMS?

This is typically not a feature available out of the box with most LMS solutions but the Tech Department understands the importance of consolidating as many daily task as possible into one platform. As part of the evaluation process the Tech Department will explore the potential options of integrating attendance into the LMS. It may be possible to include attendance, in some form, in the LMS dependent upon the cost and complexity of these options.

How will the LMS be chosen?

The LMS will be chosen through a competitive Request For Proposal (RFP) process that involves the following stakeholders: teachers, students, parents, site administrators, and District Office administrators.

The timeline provides the steps of the selection process which includes educators establishing the LMS criterion (Education Specifications Committee); stakeholders evaluating LMS usability via hands-on engagement (Sandbox Evaluation Phase); Technology Department submitting a selected LMS to the Board of Education for approval; pilot teachers and administrators participating in professional development and training; implementation of the pilot phase; pilot phase evaluation; and District-wide implementation.

Will my students be added to my class/classes automatically?

Yes.  The Tech Department is working hard to ensure that many of the LMS functionalities happen on the back end, so that students and teachers can focus on teaching and learning.

Will I be able to build assessments in the LMS?

Yes.  What assessment design will look like depends on the selected LMS.  Building assessments is critical to teachers.  We will keep you updated as more information becomes available regarding this key feature.

Do I have to use the LMS?

The LMS is a significant component of the board-approved District Technology Plan.  The benefits to teaching and learning necessitate a Districtwide implementation so that all students benefit from the collaboration, communication, critical thinking, computational thinking, and innovation that a LMS facilitates.

Therefore, all students and teachers will engage with the LMS (in a grade appropriate manner) by Fall 2019.  It is important to note that teachers and administrators will be well supported throughout the implementation process.  Ensuring that our teachers have differentiated, robust training, and support is critical.  We encourage teachers to volunteer into the LMS implementation in Spring 2019 (after the pilot phase and before District Wide implementation in Fall 2019).

How do I get assistance with the LMS?

Support and communication are critical to the LMS rollout.  Teachers will receive professional development and training on the LMS.  Just as importantly, the i4Coaches and the Site IT Specialists will be fully available to support our teachers and administrators as they engage with and implement the LMS.

Will there be a gradebook within the LMS, or are we still using JupiterGrades?

The BHUSD LMS project intends to replace the District’s current gradebook system, JupiterGrades. Most (if not all) LMS solutions have robust gradebook features. The LMS gradebook will still need to work seamlessly with the Aeries grading capabilities as Aeries will still serve as the District Student Information System and the final source of record for grades. The Tech Department will work hard to ensure that teachers will only need to enter grades in the LMS. Any synchronization of grades between the LMS and Aeries will happen automatically on the backend.

What will happen to JupiterGrades?

JupiterGrades will still continue to be used by teachers currently using it until Districtwide rollout in Fall 2019. Teachers participating in the LMS pilot will start using the LMS grading features right away.

What will happen to Aeries?

Aeries will still serve as the District Student Information System. The Technology Department is working hard to ensure that teachers will only need to use one platform for learning, assessments, grading and attendance. Any integration that the LMS needs to have with Aeries will be on the backend.
