GATE Professional Development

The Beverly Hills Unified School District has worked closely with outside consultants to provide all teachers in grades kindergarten through grade eight with professional development emphasizing the identification and service of the GATE students within the regular classroom setting.

Throughout the 2002-03 school year each teacher received between six and twelve hours of professional development in the use of the depth and complexity icons to involve students in more complex thinking learning activities.

During the 2003-04 school year the District will continue to provide teachers in grades 4-5 with additional professional development focusing on working with cluster groupings within the classroom. Mrs. Marge Hoctor, Past President of the California Association of the Gifted will provide teachers with specific strategies for working with clusters of GATE students within the classroom setting.

In addition, Mrs. Hoctor will be providing parents with specific opportunities to use the depth and complexity icons in their interactions with their children. This professional development opportunity for parents is tentatively scheduled for mid-January. Final details will be announced in December.
