Increase awareness of interdependence of whales to the marine ecosystem and to the biosphere.

Academic Focus: Science (ecology)

Academic Content Standards:

5.a students know energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis and then from organism to organism through food webs.

5.b students know matter is transferred over time from one organism to others in the food web and between organisms and the physical environment.

5.c. students know populations of organisms can be categorized by the functions they serve in an ecosystem.

5.d students know different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes.

Assessment/Reflections/Celebrations

Suggested Assessments:
  • Compare and contrast characteristics in written or oral forma
  • Detailed diagrams
  • Informational charts/graphs to show variations in the whale classifications
  • Use of related vocabulary lists
  • Research and discussion of reasons for whale population decline (environmental, over hunting, etc.)
  • Discussion of ways to save the endangered whales
Suggested Reflections/Celebrations:
  • Pre-during-post reflections
  • Write letter to legislators, companies, international leaders to save whales and their habitats
  • Read/share quarterly Whale Adoption Newsletter with peers or other grade levels
  • Whale related art project
  • Beach cleanup party

Research and identify different classifications and characteristics of whales using classroom, school and website libraries

Make model, drawing, or diagram of whale

Study food chains that include whales

Adopt a whale (by individual, partners, class)

Extension: adopt other endangered species (i.e.: manatee, chimpanzee - see Jane Goodall Institute)
