Adopt-a-Whale Poem

"The Humpback Whale and Me"
A student reflection by Alanna L., 6th-grade El Rodeo School

While scuba diving, I find a rusted device
Buried deep in years of sand and sediments
I open it and the song of the Humpback whale spills out
Seeping into every corner of my brain, until I AM the song
Then, a miracle occurred!
I was able to communicate with other Humpbacks
So I will tell you their story, singing the song of the whale.

The HUMPBACK WHALE can grow up to 53 feet
Her melodious songs cause evil to retreat
She can weigh up to 65 tons
And she is a mammal, so she breathes with her lungs.

This magnificent beauty, she's a member of the BALEEN
Her plates are the largest you ever have seen
She gulps in some water
Then pushes it out
Leaving krill behind the baleen to swallow
Some excess mist may be pushed through her spout.

Her flukes not only help her swim
But they tell others what whale she is, and has been.

She lives all over
With no real place to call home
So the Seven Seas
She will always roam.
This whale loves to breach
Where she lifts her body to the sky
It's enough to make even a
Cold-blooded sigh
She can spyhop
Where she just lifts her head
Or can lobtail, what more can be said?

I've finished her story
I'm done through and through
You want more adventure?
Wellthat's you to you!
