Educational Services - Service Learning
4th Grade: BookEnds

BookEnds is a non-profit organization that works with BHUSD to recycle books and place them in needy schools and shelters all over Southern California.

The BookEnds Book Drive is a Service-Learning project focusing on "kids helping kids." With the assistance of Elizabeth Chait, BookEnds Director and BHUSD parent, fourth graders throughout the district have learned to organize and operate their very own book drive at each elementary school site.

BookEnds works as a liaison between BHUSD and the schools in need of books. Fourth-grade students in the Beverly Hills Unified School District participate in a flyer contest, poster making, the collecting, sorting of books, public speaking, and even have the opportunity to deliver the books personally to the designated school in need.

This incorporates several California Academic Content Standards. Standards are covered in the areas of language arts, math, speaking applications, and technology.
