Kindergarten: P.A.T.H.

The kindergarten classes in BHUSD work to help a community agency called P.A.T.H. (People Assisting the Homeless). This Service-Learning project, which coincides with the celebration of 100th day of school (usually occurring in February), incorporates Math, Social Studies and Literature standards.

Children collect items (such as pennies, canned goods, tissue boxes, and other necesities) to total 100. They use their math skills to count and sort the items into groups of ten and to count to 100-- by tens, fives and/or ones. Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen is read to the students as a motivator for the project and to teach social responsibility.
