Success Story: Earth Day

Hawthorne Elementary School third graders celebrated Earth Day by planting over 60 annuals on school grounds, with the help of Atilla, the school ´s grounds keeper. For about a month, the students have been studying about plants, their needs, how they make food, reproduce, and give off oxygen for us to breathe.

The goal was for students to beautify their world by starting with their school community.

“This was an excellent Service-Learning Project for the students because it connected the science curriculum in a meaningful way,” said Rachel Braddell. Service-Learning Advocate. “The third graders enjoyed getting their hands dirty to make a difference at their school.”

Third grader Jonathan Shamouil said, “My mom is always telling me to stay clean, but today I was able to get my hands dirty and make my school a better place.”
