Success Story: Pennies for Patients

Students at Beverly Hills High School have been participating in a Service-Learning project with the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society of Los Angeles for the past few years. Two different high school departments participate in this project.

The Science students learn about blood diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma as part of their standards-based curriculum.

The History and Economic students research about the effects of a major health issue on the family dynamics and finances.

After researching this curricular aspect, a cancer survivor from the Society speaks to the classes about his or her experiences. This speaker kick-offs the "Pennies for Patients" drive.

During the following month, students collect money which is used by the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society to support families with children that are stricken with these cancers.
