Dr. Alex Cherniss is an accomplished public education leader with over 20 years of experience in teaching, school finance, and district leadership. In 2025, he was appointed Superintendent of the Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD), returning to the district where he began his career as a math teacher and later served as a principal and district administrator.

 

Dr. Cherniss has led several high-performing school districts across California. He served as Superintendent in San Marino and Palos Verdes Peninsula, where he focused on academic achievement, student support, and instructional leadership. He also led Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified, where he launched innovative programs in computer science and athletics.

 

Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Financial Officer for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, managing budgets for 80 school districts totaling over $14 billion. He has also helped shape state-level education policy and finance through his legislative work.

 

Dr. Cherniss holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Barbara and a doctorate in education from the USC Rossier School of Education, where he has taught graduate-level courses in school finance.

 

His return to BHUSD reflects his long-standing connection to the district and the community. As Superintendent, he is focused on student success, strong academic programs, and preparing schools for the future.
