Service to the Community:
Human Needs Theme
Students help the homeless by making seasonal donations, decorating healthy Valentine's lunches, collecting used toys and books, etc.

2.3.2 describe the ways in which groups and nations interact with one another and try to resolve problems in such areas as trade, cultural contacts, treaties, diplomacy, and military force

2.5 Students understand the importance of individual action and character and explain how heroes from long ago and the recent past have made a difference in others' lives

Curricular Activity

Students listen to read aloud book that fosters helping others or tells of those who help others i.e. heroes.
  • Adopt P.A.T.H. coordinated with seasonal activities.
  • In February decorate boxes and bags filled with nutritionally balanced meal.
  • Students view and discuss the components of the Food Guide Pyramid.
  • In March a P.A.T.H. guest speaker comes to class.
  • In April collect toiletries, toys, games, and books to donate.
  • In June take a field trip to P.A.T.H.

Statistics, Data Analysis and Probability

1.0 Students collect numerical data and record, organize, display, and interpret the data on bar graphs and other representations:

1.4 ask and answer simple questions related to data representations

2.1 Recognize, describe, extend patterns and determine a next term in linear patterns

Curricular Activity
Students count the number of lunches prepared and the number of items in each bag so they can graph them. (i.e. twenty pieces of fruit, four vegetables) (Extension: relate lunch food items to the Food Guide Pyramid and graph by food groups).
