Human Needs Theme
Students collect money for UNICEF while trick or treating to improve the health and well being of children internationally.

Listening and Speaking Strategies:

1.0 Students listen and respond critically to oral communication. They speak in a manner that guides and informs the listener's understanding of key ideas using appropriate phrasing, pitch and modulation.

1.1 Retell, paraphrase, and explain what a speaker has said.

Curricular Activity

Students will watch a UNICEF video describing different communities in need and view a poster that explains how money is distributed for various needs.

Students will inform public (school site or community) as they trick or treat, how the funds being collected will be distributed.

Number Sense

3.3: Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of dollar amounts in decimal notation; multiplying and dividing dollar amounts in decimal notation using whole number multiplier and divisors.

3.4 Know and understand that fractions and decimals are two different representations of the same concept.

Mathematical Reasoning

2.3 Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams and models to explain mathematical reasoning.

2.4 Express the solution clearly and logically by using the appropriate mathematical notation and terms and clear language; support solutions with evidence in both verbal and symbolic work.

Students will count and compute the amount of money collected.

Students will graph individual class totals, i.e. student totals, nickels vs. quarter, class vs. class.
