5th Grade: Jump Rope for Heart

Aligned with the California State Standards, Jump-Rope-For-Heart is designed to teach fifth-grade students about blood circulation and movement while simultaneously raising money for the American Heart Association.

In the field, students collect funds for heart disease research; in the classroom, students learn what constitutes a strong heart and what jeopardizes its health. Turning a childhood pastime into a learning opportunity, Jump-Rope-For-Heart teaches students about the heart's unique characteristics: its ability to pump blood and its capacity to care about the larger community. Students complete this service learning project having a better appreciation of the awesome powers of the human heart.

Student Reflections

Sarah: EXERCISE AND YOUR HEART: ctivities affect my heart rate by raising the number of beats per minute. My heart rate changes after I do a little activity like eating breakfast or doing the dishes or even typing right now. If I wake up from my bed my heart rate is the lowest of the day in comparison to my highest heart rate, running. When I jump rope that is a good way to my heart beat faster to stay in shape. Sleeping, walking, running, and doing chores all affect the number of times my heart beats per minute.

Daniel: HEARTPOWER: WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY: If you want to be healthy don't do bad stuff. More than 1,000,000 people killed themselves from cigarettes. Another way of having a healthy heart is for you not to drink alcohol. Alcohol can get you drunk. Also if you drink and drive, you can get into an accident. If you want to keep yourself healthy you should work out 3 times a week. You also should eat healthy food, no candy! I jumped rope for the Jump Rope for Heart. This taught me to keep my heart healthy. So remember these ways to keep your heart healthy!

Brandon: HEARTPOWER: A FEW WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HEART HEALTHY: People are getting sick because of heart disease. That's why I'm here to tell you a few ways to keep your heart healthy. One way is to eat healthy food. That means you should have 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day. Another way is to exercise everyday. You should go out and play at least an hour every day. I jumped rope to practice for Jump Rope for Heart and to raise money for the American Heart Association. This is very important. You should never ever smoke! And that's three ways to keep your heart healthy.
