RECONFIGURATION UPDATE:  EDUCATION REIMAGINED

Dear BHUSD Families & Colleagues,

We're pleased to share the first update from the Steering Committee on reconfiguration planning initiatives.

Education Reimagined

With our core mission to put students first, we have reimagined education in BHUSD to deliver the best opportunities for all students to thrive by bringing our schools and communities together. To keep informed, please stay tuned to community updates every 2 weeks by email and on our district website.

Programming

  • New Middle School Elective Offerings have been created in collaboration with administration and staff to align with high school pathways. The new Elective Course Guide and Preference Forms were sent yesterday to all Middle School (incoming 6th, 7th, 8th) families. All K-8 Counselors will begin making classroom presentations to students on Jan. 30.
  • TK-5 Elementary Schools (Hawthorne & Horace Mann) will now have 5 Electives taught by Specialists: Instrumental Music, Choral Music, Art, Maker Space & Science Lab.

Transition Advisory Committees

  • Three (3) Transition Advisory Committees have initially been formed: Brand Identity, Athletics, Student Transition.  Committee leaders will reach out directly to selected community members (made up of parents and staff from all 5 schools) this week with goals, tasks and meeting schedule. Additional committees are in the process of being structured and details will follow in mid-February.  Click here for updates.

Surveys & Interviews

To gain further insight into our community's needs and priorities, we've gathered input from teachers, staff, parents and students, through online questionnaires and over 70 interviews.

School Tours

Please continue to join opportunities to visit schools, connect with the community and school leadership. Click here for dates. Student tours will be scheduled: stay tuned for dates.

Next Up:

  • Coffee with Kevin Allen (new Middle School Principal) on Feb. 5 at Beverly Vista.
  • Coffee with Juliet Fine (Horace Mann Principal on Feb. 7 at Horace Mann.

Staffing

The annual process of a reduction in workforce started earlier this year to align with our reconfiguration plans. Notification to staff will begin this week and we hope to conclude by the end of February. All impacted staff will be noticed by March 15 per Ed Code.

We appreciate your ongoing support, optimism and commitment to the future success of our students and our district. #BH1

Respectfully,

Dr. Michael Bregy, Superintendent of Schools
