The NormanAid Wellness Center (NAWC) provides short-term, weekly, and group counseling services, as well as crisis management and resources on the most relevant health topics facing teens today.
The NormanAid Counseling Team offers services to the entire student body, averaging over 2000 individual counseling sessions every year.
Short-Term Counseling: These appointments are good for students who feel like their concern can be addressed in a single session. The therapist may help provide support and perspective about a student's situation or help develop a plan to address a distinct goal. If students need more support, we encourage that they sign up for further support or weekly counseling, and request to see the initial counselor. Counseling sessions are 40-50 minutes in duration.
Weekly Counseling: Students can sign up for ongoing counseling and meet with a counselor from the wellness team once a week. Note: if appointments are held during class, student must receive permission from their teacher.
Students can SCHEDULE an appointment to meet with a counselor for short or long term support by using the above Scheule an Appointment button or by visiting normanaidrequest.org.
Group Counseling Services: Several groups and lunchtime discussions are offered each semester. Research shows that group therapy is one of the most effective and efficient tools for addressing concerns common to people seeking counseling services. Groups will be advertised through email, @bhhsnormanaid Instagram and in the Norman Buzz.
Crisis Management: The NormanAid Counseling Team supports BHHS efforts to promote school safety and student ability to cope with crisis events. NormanAid Counselors are a vital resource in preventing violent incidents, intervening when concerns arise, and redirecting students engaging in unhealthy or unsafe behaviors. Counselors offer support to families and make mental health referrals as needed. BHHS Wellness Counselors can arrange a "Re-entry Meeting" after a mental health crisis to insure a safe and comfortable transition back to school.
ALL SERVICE ARE CONFIDENTIAL.
Confidentiality is of paramount importance to foster a safe, healing environment. Sometimes, just having a ‘safe place to talk’ is all a person needs. Confidentiality can be broken if a counselor is worried about your safety or the safety of others.
Examples of exceptions of confidentiality:
- If you report having serious thoughts about harming yourself (suicidal ideation, self harm, distorted eating) - or have had serious thoughts or attempts in the past.
- If you report having serious thoughts or plans to harm someone else.
- If you are involved in activities that could cause harm to yourself or someone else, even if you do not intend to harm yourself or someone else (for example, driving under the influence of a substance.)
- If you report that you are being assaulted or abused by anyone (adult or peer) - physically, emotionally or sexually - or that you have been assaulted or abused in the past. This includes nude photos shared without your consent. (If your are under the age of eighteen)
- If you report that you are under the influence of a substance while in session.
- Providing information concerning case consultation or supervision.
Except for situations as described above, all information you disclose to a counselor at the NormanAid Wellness Center will be kept strictly confidential.
