
Beverly Hills, CA (April 16, 2025) – At the regular board meeting on April 15, 2025, the Beverly Hills Unified School District (BHUSD) Board of Education voted 5–0 to approve the employment agreement for Dr. Alex Cherniss as the next Superintendent of Schools.
The unanimous vote marked the final step in a months-long Superintendent search process. Board members expressed strong confidence in Dr. Cherniss, citing his proven leadership, innovative mindset, and long-standing connection to BHUSD. Dr. Cherniss brings over 24 years of educational leadership and has led multiple top-performing districts across California.

"It has been such an honor to represent our school district and community in this process,” added Board Vice-President Judy Manouchehri. “Dr. Cherniss represents everything we’ve been working toward, as his leadership reflects our priorities of safety and security, modern facilities to support student programs, and academic excellence to provide our students with a strong educational foundation, and we are proud to welcome him back to BHUSD.”
Dr. Amanda Stern added, “This job is incredibly hard, and I’m confident that he has the dedication and strength to do it well.”
Dr. Cherniss previously served in BHUSD as a teacher, principal, and district administrator. He returns to the district with deep ties to the community and a clear vision for its future.
In his remarks, Dr. Cherniss said, “As Superintendent of BHUSD, I intend to model the behaviors I expect from our staff and from our students. I will model urgency to serve underperforming students and schools, the necessity for innovation and creativity, and a commitment to excellence in everything we do. It’s an honor to serve as your BHUSD Superintendent of Schools.”
The Board also extended its gratitude to Dr. Jason Hasty, Laura Collins-Williams, and Dr. Dustin Seemann for their steady leadership during the transition. Welcome home, Dr. Cherniss.
