Beverly Hills, CA (March 6, 2026) – In the inaugural year of a new partnership focused on community preparedness, students in the Beverly Hills High School Medical Science Academy are participating in hands-on emergency response training through a collaboration between the Beverly Hills Unified School District, the Beverly Hills Fire Department, and the Just In Case BH program.

Over the past several weeks, approximately 40 senior students enrolled in the Biomedical Innovation course, the capstone and highest-level class within the Medical Science Academy, have taken part in intensive training designed to prepare them for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certification. Through the program, students are learning critical emergency preparedness skills, including fire extinguisher training, disaster response protocols, triage concepts, and community safety procedures.

The initiative reflects the deep partnership between the City of Beverly Hills and its schools, and the shared commitment to preparing students not only for academic success but also for civic leadership and real-world responsibility.

Mayor Sharona Nazarian visited Beverly Hills High School to recognize the students and celebrate the program alongside Beverly Hills Fire Chief Greg Barton, BHUSD Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss, and BHUSD Board of Education Member Russell Stuart.

During her remarks, Mayor Nazarian emphasized the pride the city takes in its students and their role in the community.

“You are our future. You are the pride of Beverly Hills,” said Mayor Nazarian. “I always say our students are the most important residents in our city, and I’m thrilled to be here with you.”

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss highlighted how the program reflects the strong relationship between the district and the City of Beverly Hills.

“This program represents the very best of what happens when our schools and our city work together,” said Dr. Cherniss. “In Beverly Hills, we often speak about the three pillars of our community: our police, our fire department, and our schools. When those pillars work in partnership, we create powerful opportunities for students to learn, serve, and lead. These students are gaining real skills that will stay with them for life.”

The CERT training program represents a powerful example of how collaboration between the City of Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills Unified School District continues to expand meaningful opportunities for students while strengthening the safety and resilience of the broader community.

Through programs like this, Beverly Hills High School prepares students for futures in healthcare, public service, and leadership while living out its guiding principle: Today Well Lived.
